  • How does acupuncture work?

In traditional theory, pain and illness are caused by stagnation or deficiency of Qi, the internal energy which circulates throughout the body. Acupuncture stimulates the points along meridians (pathways in the body), to adjust and balance the flow of Qi, restoring health.

    Is acupuncture safe?

Yes, acupuncture is very safe when performed by a trained, licensed acupuncturist using sterile, disposable needles.

    Are there any side effects?

Slight bruising may occur at the site of needle insertion, or there may be a drop of blood when the needles are removed. More serious side effects are very rare.

    Is it painful?

Acupuncture needles are ultra-thin and flexible, much smaller than the hypodermic needles used by your doctor. You may have a slight sensation when the needle is inserted. Acupoints on the hands and feet are typically more sensitive than other points on the body. After insertion, you may feel some heaviness, distention, tingling or electric sensation either around the needle or traveling up or down the affected meridian.

Can I combine acupuncture with other medical treatment?

Absolutely! Acupuncture can be used with conventional western medicine, chiropractic, or naturopathic care. It is important, however, to keep me informed of all your other treatments, diagnosed medical conditions, medications and supplements.

How many acupuncture treatments will I need?

The number of treatments depends on several factors including severity of the problem, and whether it is an acute or chronic health problem. Acute, recent conditions may resolve within a few visits, while chronic, long-term conditions may require treatment for several months. Every person is unique. Your condition will be assessed and a treatment plan will be recommended specifically for you.

How long does a treatment take?

The initial history, exam, and treatment will take approximately 1-1/2 hours. Follow-up treatments will take about 1 hour.

How long do you leave the needles in?

Typically, needles are left in for about 20 minutes. Most people find this a relaxing time. Sometimes needles may be taken out within 10 or 15 minutes, or left in longer. Factors such as age, condition being treated, other modalities to be used, and constitution are considered in determining the length of time.

When do you prescribe Chinese herbal medicine?

Herbal medicine can be helpful to promote healing and to alleviate pain. If herbal medicine may be helpful in your condition, I will discuss with you their function and the role they will play in your treatment plan. I will also need to know if you have any allergies, take any prescription medications, supplements or other herbal products.

Can I take herbs if I am taking prescription medication?

It depends on the medication. Please be sure to bring a list of all prescription medications. Also, provide a list of all over-the-counter medications, supplements and other herbal products you are taking.

    Are Chinese herbal products safe?

I use concentrated herbal extracts that undergo testing to ensure bio-identity and product safety. This includes tests for: pesticides, bio-contaminants, sulfites, and heavy metals. The herbs are manufactured in facilities that are certified current good manufacturing practices (CGMPs) by the FDA and often exceed U.S. safety and quality standards.
